UPCOMING SHOWS AT THE AGGIE THEATRE (week of 2/8/10)

Friday, February 12
North Mississippi Allstars
w/ City Champs
Tickets: $18

North Mississippi Allstars formed in 1996, a product of a special time for modern Mississippi country blues. Legendary blues musicians R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner and their musical families were drawing international attention, making classic records and touring the world. Brothers and founding members Luther and Cody Dickinson spent their childhoods soaking up the influence of the musical legacy of their father, producer Jim Dickinson (Big Star, The Replacements). They absorbed the north Mississippi blues legacy while shaking it on down at the juke joints with their blues ancestors. Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums and vocals) eventually joined up with bassist Chris Chew to form the core of The North Mississippi Allstars. Through the filter of generations of Mississippi blues men, the Allstars pioneered their own blues-infused brand of rock and roll. After touring as an opening act for a variety of artists and honing their chops as a unit, the Allstars released the debut album, "Shake Hands With Shorty," in the spring of 2000. The debut proved to be a success and earned the band a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary Blues Album.” Bringing their hill country stomp to stages all over the country and the world (including multiple tours in Europe and Asia), the Allstars quickly gained a loyal fan base. The band gained additional popularity for its role as part of the gospel/blues band The Word, which also featured keyboard player John Medeski (of Medeski Martin & Wood) and virtuoso pedal steel player Robert Randolph. By 2005, the Allstars had released four studio records, three of which were nominated for Grammy awards, and earned the reputation as one of the most intriguing acts to emerge from the loam of Southern blues and roots rock. The band released "Hernando" in early 2008, which represented a return to the blues/rock roots the band started out from more than a decade ago. It was also the first release on the trio’s own label, "Songs of the South Records." The band recently released a retrospective record entitled "Do It Like We Used To Do." The two CD/one DVD package features two discs of music that chronologically highlights the band’s live performances over the first twelve years, and also includes a full-length documentary DVD on the history of the band. The documentary captures rare live footage, interviews with the guys, and tells the story of a classic American band. In 2007, Luther became a full-time member of the popular roots rock/Americana band The Black Crowes, taking over the duties of lead guitarist. He currently continues to tour and record with both bands.

Saturday, February 13
Guttermouth
w/ Chaser & Die Ignorant
Tickets: $12

Guttermouth is an American punk rock band formed in 1988 in Huntington Beach, California. The band currently records for Volcom Entertainment. The band has released nine full-length studio albums, two live albums and has toured extensively, including numerous performances on the Vans Warped Tour. The band is somewhat infamous for outrageous lyrics and behavior which is deliberately explicit, offensive and intended to shock, though usually in a humorous and sarcastic manner. This behavior has sometimes resulted in high-profile problems for the band, such as being banned from performing in Canada for a year and leaving the 2004 Vans Warped Tour amidst controversy over political views and attitudes towards other performers. In 2005, drummer Ty Smith left Guttermouth to focus on his new band Bullets And Octane and was replaced by Ryan Farrell. Bass player Kevin Clark departed the following year and founding member Clint Weinrich returned to the group. This lineup recorded the band’s tenth album, "Shave the Planet," released in 2006 by Volcom Entertainment. The album found the band once again using its patented brand of humor-laden punk rock to poke fun at a number of subjects. Guttermouth continues to tour and perform in support of the album.
